If you have a heartbeat, you can drum. If you breathe, you can drum. If you can breathe and your heart beats at the same time you have polyrhythm! In this playful workshop, participants will learn the physical and community benefits of drumming; basic tones, culture and use of various types of hand drums; how to make a rhythm interesting and start to improvise by adding, subtracting, and emphasizing beats; switching between rhythms comfortably; and playing together in polyrhythm- both improvising and with one or more traditional West African rhythms. Participants should bring a large hand drum such as a djembe, doumbek, frame drum, ashiko, or conga- or contact the instructor through Artworks to borrow a drum.

Amy Lemich-McNabb is a singer/songwriter/guitar player and percussionist who has been playing professionally since 1994. Amy’s “day job” is performing at over 100 nursing homes in Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, and Florida. She is certified to play music at the bedside of the chronically and terminally ill.In addition to voice and guitar, Amy plays various hand drums including the West African djembe and talking drum, Middle Eastern doumbek, and frame drum (bodhran and Native American styles). She facilitates drum circles, teaches drumming in group situations and offers private lessons.Although primarily a solo performer, Amy enjoys collaborating with various other musicians. She has performed with a number of groups including Get Over Yourself, a classic rock trio; ArtemisMuse, a women’s world music trio; the Easton Unitarian Church drum circle; and an Irish session that meets at the Riverside Inn in Greensborough.Amy adds her own personal style to familiar tunes from the 1800’s to the popular music of today. Her current CD, “The Journey” is a concept album in the style of Joseph Campbell, fusing the mythology and music of various cultures.
