Meet the Instructor
Karen Douglas a retiree new to the Chestertown area has come back to clay and would love to share her experiences. Karen has loved working in clay since she was a teenager; she was mesmerized when she first saw sJune 10, meone working on a potter's wheel. She received a degree in Art History from Virginia Commonwealth University where she took courses in wheel throwing. After college she studied with two internationally-known potters who insisted she start with handbuilding and at the same time was also introduced to raku. Karen became an administrator for Earthworks, a company that sold clay equipment in Richmond, VA. She also got involved with the Hand Workshop, a non-profit craft organization that specialized in clay. There she taught classes to adults and children and helped organize their juried shows. Karen still loves handbuilding in clay as well as raku. Her new interest is exploring how to print monotypes on clay.

PRESENTING OUR INSTRUCTORS

Marilee Schumann has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture  from the University of Maryland and currently teaches ceramics at Washington College, Chestertown, where she did her undergraduate studies. Functional and decorative ceramic vessels with contemporary style and elegant glazes are a specialty, although her work encompasses cast metal, mixed media constructions and even rustic furniture. Marilee has exhibited widely, including at Artworks, and has received numerous awards for her art. Her current work and additional information can be found at: www.marileeschumannart.com.

Gia Campana earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia. In addition to local exhibits and sales she creates commissioned work for private clients. She has taught pottery and sculpture classes at Artworks and other Kent County venues and has been a leader in developing Artworks Clay Studio. Gia finds clay irresistible and imparts her love of the medium to students as she helps them transform their ideas into works of art.

Rick Bisgyer Is a newcomer to Artworks and Kent County, Rick developed an appreciation for fine ceramic art in his youth, surrounded by his parents’ collection of contemporary pottery. He finally got his hands in clay at Glen Echo Pottery, a community art studio outside of Washington DC, and it was not long before he built the first pottery wheel at his high school and started teaching his classmates the basics. That love of teaching has carried through his life, earning him a Bachelor of Science in Education at Georgia State University, and teaching positions in a variety of settings. For the past 8 years Rick has been a full time ceramic artist working in porcelain. He has been represented by fine craft galleries across the country and has juried into some of the nation’s most prestigious craft shows. Throughout this time he has continued his commitment to community arts, helping to create and enhance community art organizations, and enjoying the rewards of teaching in them.

Joan Reed studied at Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, and the University of  Delaware. Intending a career in fashion design, she strayed into the clay studio and never looked back. Her enjoyment of gardening led to the creation of her signature outdoor pottery --- birdhouses, birdbaths and sundials. Joan helped found Artworks’ original Clay Studio and has been a regular on our teaching staff. Her imaginative pottery and sculpture are frequently exhibited and are for sale in Artworks Gift Shop.

Sarah Lyle has been involved with Artworks since its inception. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and has a degree in Art Education from Washington College. Her recent teaching experience in the community includes projects in many local schools, classes for Artworks, Imagination Alley, and private lessons.

Sue Stockman of St. Michaels, MD, exhibits her jewelry, mosaics, and sculpture throughout the United States and her pieces reside in collections worldwide. Her popular classes and workshops encourage personal creativity and growth on many levels. Sue has taught several mosaics workshops at Artworks.

JoLecia Crowe From her early pencil portraits and sketches to her forays
into photography, clothing design and construction, and now in her
sculpture and art jewelry, JoLecia has shown a natural gift for things artistic since she was old enough to hold a pencil. She began sculpting in paper and polymer clay over 15 years ago and is most known for her richly detailed custom elves and cake toppers.
